For the Clark family, dairy farming is at the core of their work life.

They work side by side with Bob handling most of the milking chores and son Robbie managing the herd and the young stock.

But the family has its hands in more than hay.

For many years, they had a maple syrup business in season and processed the raw syrup in a sugar shack on their property.

Now they have an education center on the farm, a home store and gift shop selling local Vermont products, and a compost business where they sell their products to local garden enthusiasts, nurseries, and greenhouse owners.

Says Mary Clark: “We love the land and sharing the farm with visitors year round.

But dairy farming is a tough business with wide swings in milk prices.

These side businesses let us work side by side and help even things out when milk prices don’t cooperate.”
